Bachelor's Degree in Applied Foreign Languages

Arts, Lettres et Langues

Academic year : 2017 / 2018

last update 28/11/2012

    Course objectives and characteristics

    This degree is, above all, a languages degree with a professional bent. Both languages (students take either English and German or English and Spanish) are approached from multiple angles: grammar, comprehension, oral and written expression, culture and civilisation (taught in the target language) and translation (in both directions). Additional economic and scientific subjects will help to prepare students for specialised scientific and economic translation, and provide them with a broader knowledge base. These academic studies are complemented by courses covering communication techniques and advanced IT skills, essential components of any further education.

    In the final year of undergraduate studies (L3), a compulsory work placement of 6 weeks, in France or overseas, allows students to gain valuable professional experience. Students may also opt to complete their final year abroad, via our existing exchange programme (England) or the ERASMUS scheme (Spain, Germany, elsewhere). We encourage all students to spend time in a foreign country, in order to reinforce their language skills and to acquire cultural experience which will be a considerable asset in their professional lives.

    Course structure

    Each academic year is broken down into two teaching semesters, both followed by examinations. Lectures, Tutorials (also known as TD) and Practical Seminars (or TP) are grouped into Teaching Units (TU). Some subjects are compulsory, others are chosen from a range of options. These optional papers offer students the chance to study topics of interest from the course in greater detail and/or to discover topics from other disciplines and to explore inter-disciplinary approaches.

    The LEA degree offers a multi-disciplinary academic experience, based on the study of two languages (English and Spanish or English and German, with equal weight given to both languages) and two further applied subjects based on locally-specific research of international significance (science and economics).

      Examinations and awarding of degrees

      Bachelor’s degree = 180 validated ECTS* credits.

      Teaching Units are assessed by written and oral examinations.

      The programme of assessments which leads to the awarding of a Bachelor’s degree includes examinations for each semester of the course, comprising:

      • A system of continuous assessment (which may be based on marks awarded for coursework) for the subjects taught in tutorials and/or seminars;
      • A final examination;
      • A combination of both methods.

      Nonetheless, the continuous assessment method is prioritised as much as possible.

      Two distinct examination sessions are organised over the course of the academic year.

      The first examination sessions take place shortly after each semester, with the second (re-sits) held in September.

      These RCC  regulations apply to the following courses:

      • English/Spanish
      • English/German
