Bachelor's Degree in Applied Foreign Languages: English and German
Arts, Lettres et Langues

Academic year : 2017 / 2018

last update 28/11/2012

    Course objectives and characteristics

The bachelor’s degree in applied foreign languages offers comprehensive training in translation: specialised translation for economic and scientific purposes, written, oral and audiovisual translation. The course is completed by modules focusing on communication techniques and IT tools, including software tools for translation and subtitling.

In the final year of undergraduate studies (L3), a compulsory work placement of 6 weeks, in France or overseas, allows students to gain valuable professional experience. Students may also opt to complete their final year abroad, via our existing exchange programme (England) or the ERASMUS scheme (Spain, Germany, elsewhere).

    Course structure

Students begin to specialise in the final year of their undergraduate degree (L3).

This third year is broken down into two teaching semesters, each followed by examinations. Lectures, Tutorials (also known as TD) and Practical Seminars (or TP) are grouped into Teaching Units (TU). Some subjects are compulsory, others are chosen from a range of options. These optional papers offer students the chance to study topics of interest from the course in greater detail and/or to discover topics from other disciplines and to explore inter-disciplinary approaches.

    Accompagnement pédagogique

Students receive academic support in various forms throughout their studies :

    • Access to online services (academic portal, course resources, personal online progress monitoring),
    • A designated supervising tutor,
    • Advice on choosing the right Master’s degree, provided by the teaching team and the PIOLE centre (Information and Orientation for Pupils and Students),
    • Additional certificates in language skills (CLES), ICT (C2I) and Computer-Assisted Translation (TAO) integrated into the degree course.

    Internship

In addition to the core academic components, the course incorporates a professional work placement of six weeks.

    Job Opportunities

This degree prepares students for careers in language services, professional translation within companies or as free-lance translators, interpreting, subtitling for film and television, the creation of multi-lingual websites and a host of other professions which require superior skills in French and foreign languages, communication and written expression, translation and the use of information technologies.
