    Course objectives and characteristics

    The Bachelor’s degree in Biology offers a broad, thorough training in the different fundamental subjects which are essential for a successful academic career in Biology, Genetics, and Animal and Plant Physiology.  The degree lasts three years, and throughout the course students are supported and guided in their choice of modules by the teaching staff.  Each year of the degree, from the acquisition of fundamental principles up to specialisation, focuses on precise objectives so that students can plan and develop both their academic studies and their subsequent professional careers.

    This pathway is aimed at students who wish to deal with large scale biological issues supported by resources in IT that they will be able to design and develop themselves.  This professional course, begun in the final year of the degree (L3) can be followed up at Masters level over two further years (M1 and M2); and is characterised by combined expertise in biology and IT.  The whole training (L3, M1 and M2) adds up to 45 weeks of internships and professional teaching modules (management, intellectual property, recruitment training, English, production systems).

     

    Course structure

    Students begin to specialise in the final year of the degree (L3). 
    It is broken down into two teaching semesters each followed by examinations. Lectures (also known as CM), Tutorials (TD) and Practical Work (TP) are grouped into Teaching Units (TU).

    Accompagnement pédagogique

    Students receive academic support in various forms throughout their studies :

    • Access to online services (academic portal, course resources, personal online progress monitoring…),
    • A designated supervising tutor,
    • Assistance in orientation towards the Masters provided by the teaching staff, the Department of Information and Orientation of High School Students and Undergraduates (PIOLE),
    • Certificates in languages and information technology as part of the degree (CLES, C2I).

     

     

    Internship

    In addition to the academic components the course will incorporate a professional internship.

    Situated in the Evry Genetics Hub, the IUP GBI (Institut Universitaire Professionel, Génie Biologique et Informatique, or Professional University Institute for Biological Engineering and IT) benefits from an exceptional pool of bio-industries, start-ups in biotechnology and public research laboratories specialising in post-genomics.
    The National Centre for Genome Sequencing (Centre National de Séquençage), the National Centre for Genotyping (Centre National de Génotypage), Généthon, the Research Unit in Plant Genomics (Unité de Recherche en Génomique Végétale), the Functional Genomics Department (Service de Génomique Fonctionnelle), the Molecular Neurogenetics Laboratory (Laboratoire de Neurogénétique Moléculaire), the Genetics of Auto-Immune Diseases Laboratory (Laboratoire de Génétique des Maladies Auto-immunes), the Genetics and Pathology of Prostatic Tumors Laboratory (Laboratoire de Génétique et Pathologie des Tumeurs Prostatiques), Bioinformatic Workshop (Atelier de Bioinformatique), the Statistics and Genomics Laboratory (Laboratoire de Statistique et Génome), Integrative Biology IT and Complex Systems (Informatique Biologie Intégrative et Systèmes Complexes), the Structure and Recognition of Biomolecules Laboratory (Laboratoire de Structure et Reconnaissance des Biomolécules), the Laboratory for Statistical Methodology and Genetic Epidemology of Multifactorial Diseases (Laboratoire de Méthodologie Statistique et Epidémiologie Génétique des Maladies Multifactorielles).

     

    Employment opportunities

    There are two possible professional directions :

    • Research and development in bioinformatics
    • Research and development in biotechnologies

    In the field of bio-industries: health, pharmaceutical industries, environment, agribusiness or in public research laboratories: (INSERM, CNRS, INRA, CEA).

     

    Further study

    Students may opt to pursue their studies up to Master’s level (bac + 5) or beyond

     

    Terms of admission

    Admission to L3 :

    • Students with a BTS or DUT in a compatible field may be admitted, subject to the approval of the course director.
    • Students must have 120 academic credits (ECTS) from years one and two of this course, or 120 academic credits from years one and two of another course and the formal agreement of the course director.
