    Course objectives and characteristics

    The degree in Mathematics is an inter-disciplinary course which concentrates primarily on mathematics.

    The course provides a general grounding in mathematics, as essential for future teachers and researchers in mathematics as it is for future mathematicians in industry, in banking, IT service industries, and research in economics, biology, or genetics.

    The final year (L3) option in Mathematics consists of general teaching in mathematics at L3 level, leading to further studies in mathematics at Master’s level or to teacher training (in particular the CAPES; the secondary education teaching examination), and possible admission to engineering schools.

    Learning in mathematics is prioritised, but the course has supplementary modules in computer science (C++) and foreign languages.

     

     

    Course structure

    Students begin to specialise in the final year of the degree (L3). 

    This third year is broken down into two teaching semesters, each followed by examinations. Lectures (also known as CM), Tutorials (TD) and Practical Work (TP) are grouped into Teaching Units (TU).

     

    Accompagnement pédagogique

    Students receive academic support in various forms throughout their studies:

    • Access to online services (academic portal, course resources, personal online progress monitoring…),
    • A designated supervising tutor,
    • Assistance in orientation towards the Masters provided by the teaching staff, the Department of Information and Orientation of High School Students and Undergraduates (PIOLE),
    • Certificates in languages and information technology as part of the degree (CLES, C2I).

     

     

     

    Further study

    Academic training can be followed by further studies up to Master’s level (bac + 5) or higher.

    Terms of admission

    For admission to the third year (L3), students must have 120 academic credits (ECTS) from years one and two of this course, or 120 academic credits from years one and two of another course and the formal agreement of the course director.

    Special cases:

    students from other academic backgrounds may be admitted directly to the third year, subject to evaluation of their application by the admissions committee. This option is open to candidates from Grande Ecole preparatory classes and those with a BTS or DUT in a compatible field. Candidates must satisfy the entry criteria stipulated by the teaching staff of the SFA department.
